Dilli Haat: Cuisine from North East India

Soumabha     6:09 AM     Delhi NCR, Soumabha     4 comments

Dilli Haat is a  permanent, open-air food and handicraft market which is open throughout the day, everyday and is one of the major attractions of the national capital. From a foodie's point of view, the variety of food items available from the local cuisines of different parts of India makes it a food lover's paradise.

Through stalls of almost every state, Dilli Haat brings about a concept of Food Bazaar in which one can roam around and choose the best dishes from every state to fill his/her stomach. From the Kashmiri Wazwaan to the Idlis of Tamil Nadu and Pooranpoli of Maharasthra to Momos of Arunachal, it is all under one big market. Enticed to try everything at once, we started with the North East Indian cuisine.

Other than Tripura and Mizoram, the other states have put up stalls that are functional and overseen by the respective state authorities. Unable to eat every item, we sampled a few which we thought definitely took the cake.

Nagaland Stall
Stall No 19

The Nagaland stall is the biggest and grandest of the North East Indian stalls at Dilli Haat. It is always crowded and the waiters pay little or no heed to the customers if they are seated far off. They serve a variety of dishes with the Raja Mircha chutney, better known as the Ghost Chilli Paste and the Akhuni Chutney which is made of soya and garlic.

Pork Ribs
Pork Ribs

We tasted their famed Pork Ribs and Chilli Fried Prawns. The Pork Ribs were well done, extremely crispy on the outer layer and fibrous inside. The ribs were cut up nicely into two huge pieces which were sliced with a layer of fat on top and some meat towards the bottom. It was served along with a chilli paste which added some spice to the not so bland smoked ribs.

Chilli Fried Prawns

The Chilli Fried Prawns were de-veined and cleaned and served on sticks. The coating was extremely thin and the marination had seeped in making it pretty tasty.

Meghalaya Stall
Stall No 5

The Meghalaya cuisine here is famous for the Doh Syiar Khleh, a chicken salad and Wak Bijak which is a bamboo shoot pork curry. The Doh Syiar Khleh is a bland salad with boneless chicken pieces, egg white and vegetables with salt and pepper added for taste.

The Wak Bijak was better, cooked in what seemed like pork fat, the pork was made in thick dark gravy with an earthy taste of sesame seed. It tasted wonderfully with the plain rice.

The Meghalaya stall has some sort of feud with the Momo Mia - Arunachal Pradesh stall and though these are right in front of each other they refused to serve food on the other's table.

Assam Stall
Stall No 23

At the Assam stall, one can order a variety of thalis and beverages. Known for its famous tea, we ordered the Assam tea to go along with Pabda Curry and rice. Pabda, a river fish from the Ganges is cleaned and made into a semi spicy thick gravy. The Assamese preparation of fish curry is not entirely different from that of West Bengal with excess of turmeric, jeera and onion paste being used to make thick curries.

Sikkim Stall
Stall No 11

The Sikkimese stall served authentic Sikkimese Noodles, which sparked our interest. However, we soon found out that other than an extra pinch of turmeric, these noodles tasted pretty much same as compared to the Noodles served in other places.

Arunachal Pradesh Stall
Stall No 6

The Arunachal Pradesh stall, also known as Momo Mia is right opposite the Meghalaya stall and makes fantastic non-alcoholic fruit and lime beers. They sell both steamed and fried varieties of momos, served with a vegetable broth to enhance the taste. The momo skins are a bit too thick but the meat juice had seeped in extremely well making it a delight for everyone. Their thukpa is another dish worth trying. A spicy meat broth with noodles and other vegetables, the thukpa is primarily a tibetan noodle soup.

Manipur Stall
Stall No 12

The Manipur stall was a bit of a disappointment. We had heard about their famous snail curry, Tarai Thong, which is very popular among the people of Manipur but unfortunately neither that nor Ngou Thong, which is a spicy fish curry, was available. The restaurant manager informed us that since these dishes aren't frequently eaten, they prepare it only by order.

Eromba
Eromba

They do prepare Eromba, which is a mixture of bamboo shoots and dried fish. The dish lets out a bad odour owing to the dried fish, but tastes extremely good when had with rice. The Pork Momos of the Manipur stall weren't very good, the meat had let out oil which tasted horribly with every bite of the steamed momos.

Sri Kanya: Takeaway Andhra food

Soumabha     5:44 PM     Hyderabad, Restaurant Reviews, Sabyasachi     1 comment

A small takeaway place tucked in the corner of the lane next to Model House, Punjagutta, it is not very easy to locate. But during lunch and dinner, you will find a small crowd jostling with each other to have a look at the items prepared on that day and place their orders.

Hyderabad Andhra Srikanya

This place may be small, but they have a very dedicated clientele. They do not offer in house dining, you can only take away parcels from here. The parcel service serves Coastal Andhra cuisine with lots of seafood preparations. All the items are neatly displayed inside a glass counter, so that you can see them before placing the order. It is thus, easier for persons outside Andhra Pradesh who are not familiar with the item names as they can point and order.

Hyderabad Andhra Srikanya Quail
Kamju (Quail) fry

One of my favorites here is the Kamju Fry -soft and crunchy fried quails in a bed of  spicy masala. This is a fast moving item in this takeaway and usually not available after 7 PM. Each bird costs about Rs 60.

Hyderabad Andhra Srikanya Chicken Fry Biryani
Chicken Fry Biryani

The Chicken Fry Biryani (which is basically Andhra Pulao) has hot and spicy chicken fry pieces served on a bed of bagara rice. The rice has the aroma of clove and cardamom and other spices in which it is prepared. A copious amount of red chili paste or powder goes into the Chicken Fry making it delightfully spicy. The Chicken dish can also be savoured on a standalone basis.

Hyderabad Andhra Srikanya Keema
Keema

Apart from this, the Mutton Keema Biryani here is also very popular. For vegetarians, Vegetable Biryani is also available. A plate of biryani can normally serve two people. I particularly like the taste of the salan which comes with the biryani – spicy and distinctly different.  Again, you can buy the keema or mutton fry pieces standalone without going for the biryani.

Hyderabad Andhra Srikanya Fish Iguru
Rohu Fish Iguru

The seafood of Sri Kanya is also something not be missed. The crab roast and prawn masala are well appreciated. They normally have more than one variety of fish like rohu, korameenu and pandu gappa. The chicken leg roast is another item to be tried. The chicken is well cooked and the masala is a perfect complement to the succulent chicken pieces.

Hyderabad Andhra Srikanya Gongura Chicken
Gongura Chicken

Among the gravy items, Gongura Mamsam, a mutton cooked gravy of sorrel leaves and Kodi Pulusu or chicken curry is also available. Try their Mutton Liver Fry- you won't regret it.

Sri Kanya is a must try joint for Andhra food in Hyderabad. Normally the popular items get over early in the evening, so reach early to avoid disappointment. Most of the items are extremely spicy, so do not try their food if you cannot withstand an extra dose of chili. Their lack of choice for vegetarians and the fact that the place does not accept credit cards are to be kept in mind while visiting.

The Ancient Barbeque, Noida

Soumabha     7:56 PM     Delhi NCR, Restaurant Reviews, Soumabha     1 comment

Barely over a month old, The Ancient Barbeque which recently opened up in Noida Sector 63 has already created waves in the foodie world. Competing against giants such as Barbeque Nation, the Ancient Barbeque has had a pretty decent start and will look to capitalise on this.

The Marinates
The Marinades

Decked with abstract art paintings on the walls and furnished with a wooden layout of chairs and tables, the decor of the restaurant is really enthralling. Like most of the barbeque restaurants, there is a live charcoal barbeque on every table. All the starters are served directly to the table and the half cooked skewers can be finished off by the foodies themselves by adding marinates according to their taste preferences.

Accompanied with a complimentary mocktail, the starters fell in the first line of attack. Though each and every starter had its novelty, the Crispy Chilli Garlic Prawns and Mayo Potato Salsa really stole the show. Touched with sour cream, mayonnaise and onions on potato cutlets, the Mayo Potato Salsa was a preparation that I had never tasted before.

Mexican Pineapple, Pudina Fish Tikka and Paneer Tikka Jalandhari were the other starters worth mentioning. Other than the ones offered in the BBQ deal, we also tried their Chilli Fish and Mutton Burrah. Though their Chilli Fish tasted more or less like the Chilli Garlic Prawns, it was the Mutton Burrah which surprised us. Rich and succulent, one could gnaw on the lamb chops for hours without getting tired.

In most of the barbeque restaurants, I often find that the main dishes are a shadow of what the starters were, but, surprisingly, in The Ancient Barbeque, their main course dishes were at least at par if not better than their starters. Their saag preparations deserve most of the accolades, especially Sarson ka saag and Methi Chicken which were topped with white butter. The concept of amplifying the saag's taste was certainly refreshing as it had the required zing. The misty sweet Rogan Josh and spicy Hyderabadi Biryani too give a fair reflection of the Kashmiri and Nizami cuisine.

For the sweet tooth, I would definitely recommend their Caramel Tart, Chocolate Brownie and Beetroot ka Halwa with ice-cream. Made of mashed and boiled beetroots, the halwa complemented the vanilla ice-cream extremely well, making a fine end to the wonderful meal. At the end of the feast, there are pan shots which refresh your mouth and is a must try for one and all.

Times Food and Nightlife Awards, Hyderabad

Soumabha     6:17 PM     Events, Hyderabad, Sabyasachi     1 comment

The Times awards function is an annual feature in the food map of Hyderabad as well as other major metros in India. In this award ceremony, the best restaurants and pubs of the city are honored under different categories, and the Times Food Guide for the year is released.

Times Food Awards

The award ceremony was held on 3rd February at Novotel HICC Centre.  I was very curious to know the results as many of my friends were in fray for it. I was also as usual looking forward to the Times Food Guide which gives a comprehensive view on most of the restaurants in Hyderabad, and is a handy book which can be used throughout the year to decide on the places to go out to.

Hyderabad Times Food award Ruci and Idoni

The Award presentation started with the launch of the Times Food Guide by actress Tamanna, followed by  announcement of awards in each category. A celebrity was called to hand over each award. The Master of Ceremony enthralled the audience by making humorous references, mostly to the political situation in the country.

Hyderabad Times Food award Kangan

Among the winners Thea Bar and Kitchen won the Best Continental in the Fine Dine  section. Ruci and Idoni was the best continental outlet in the Fine Dine category.

Hyderabad Times Food Award Coffee Cup

The Coffee Cup is now anointed the best coffee bar in Hyderabad. In Chinese, Oriental Blossom won in the fine dine category whereas Mainland China was the other winner.

Hyderabad Times Food Award

Mekong bagged the best Pan-Asian restaurant award in the fine dine category, in casual dine it was Urban Asia.  In vegetarian section, A La Liberty was the winner.Kismet in the Park was awarded the best nightclub.

Food at the Mekong Stall

The award ceremony also has stalls from all the winners of the award, and that provides an excellent opportunity to taste the best available food. The winners had lined up their best offerings and the eager food enthusiasts from all over the twin cities bonded over food, trying out the best from the winners in each category, and congratulating the winners. In corners of the huge hall, people were discussing animatedly who should have won and who should have not. Some murmur of discontent were also heard.

Hyderabad Times Food Award Kismet

It was overall an excellent initiative from the Times Group and will help the people of Hyderabad to choose their dining out spots during 2014. As a street food enthusiast I would also like to see even smaller places being included in the ensuing years.
